Burlington Field Maintenance Shop
Faced with an outdated and undersized leased building for their field maintenance operations in Burlington, KY, the Kentucky National Guard, Department of Military Affairs, and Commonwealth of Kentucky (DECA) sought to replace their aging facility. CMTA was hired to provide MEP engineering, low voltage, and security design for the new, zero energy replacement field maintenance shop. The 25,000 SF facility features a 4-bay maintenance work area with adjacent rooms for supplies, tools, POL storage, batteries, janitorial needs, and laundry. Additionally, the southern end of the building houses administrative offices, a telecom/server room, classrooms, and a physical fitness room.
One of the project's primary goals was to reduce energy consumption, aiming to achieve net zero energy and LEED Silver certification. To meet these objectives, the site and structure will incorporate sustainable features, such as a 240 kW solar photovoltaic array and a geothermal HVAC system.
Additional energy reduction strategies include efficiencies in the building envelope, LED lighting, dedicated outdoor air system (DOAS) with energy recovery, radiant heating of the maintenance bay, and geothermal domestic water heating. Moreover, a building automation system will enable scheduling and efficient operation of all HVAC equipment. The all-electric facility eliminates the need for natural gas-fired equipment, thereby reducing site-based carbon emissions.
