Loudoun County Public Schools, located in Leesburg, Virginia, partnered with CMTA Energy Solutions to implement a Guaranteed Energy Savings Contract at J. Lupton Simpson Middle School. A Technical Energy Audit of the building identified several opportunities to save operational costs while also improving the learning and working environment in the building. This project, which includes a 592.5 kW solar photovoltaic array, was completed over the summer of 2020.
The recently replaced roof made this school a perfect candidate for Loudoun County Public School’s first large solar installation. Another major objective of this project was the renovation to LED lighting throughout the building. The new LED lighting completely changed the look of the facility. Occupancy sensors were installed in strategic locations to control the new lighting and dimming controls were installed in all instructional and office spaces. Additional project improvements are listed below:
592.5 kW PV Solar Array Composed of 1,500 solar panels
Full LED Lighting Renovation, Both Interior and Exterior
Controls Retro-commissioning
Transformer Replacements
Building Envelope Improvements
Water Efficiency Upgrades
Bunsen Burner Fuel Conversion to Natural Gas from Propane
Utility Meter Elimination
Domestic Water Heating Improvements
This project reduced energy usage by 61%, resulting in a post-project EUI of 16.6 and the elimination of 993 metric tons of carbon dioxide. This school is the first Loudoun County facility to achieve a perfect 100 ENERGY STAR score.
