GreenCity Partners LLC, in partnership with Henrico County, aims to create a private, mixed use “ecodistrict” in Richmond, Virginia. Totaling 204 acres, the GreenCity master plan will create a more authentic urban district through the balanced development of multifamily residential, commercial, hospitality, public events and attractions, and retail spaces. The adaptive reuse of the former Best Products Headquarters Building is included in the first phase of the GreenCity project. At 422,400 SF, the Best Products building is set to be the largest Living Building Challenge building in the world.
CMTA serves as the MEP engineer and sustainable design consultant for this ongoing project. The design approach for the Best Products Headquarters begins with the re-use of the existing structure, which will have a material impact in lowering the embodied carbon for the development when compared to a new building. The building aims to meet the requirements of the Living Building Challenge, the world’s highest level of sustainability design and operations standards. These standards require a building to provide net-positive energy and water, as well as produce zero waste. CMTA is helping GreenCity design new, efficient systems that will ensure a comfortable and sustainable working environment for occupants of the Best Products building.
Designed to promote sustainability, civic engagement, inclusion, and environmental responsibility, GreenCity will integrate parks and open space into the district. The developers also aim to build the greenest arena venue in North America, as well as 2 hotels, 2,400 housing units, and 2.3M SF of commercial and retail space.
