Hart County School DistrictMunfordville, Kentucky

Hart County Schools partnered with CMTA to implement a Guaranteed Energy Savings Contract aimed at modernizing infrastructure, reducing energy consumption, and generating substantial utility cost savings for the district—all while improving the learning environment. Partially funded through a $6.7 million federal Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) grant, the project also received $793,078.71 in Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) funding. This funding was awarded due to the successful implementation of a highly efficient geothermal HVAC system at Memorial Elementary School. As the first project in Kentucky to receive IRA funding, Hart County Schools is leading the way in leveraging federal incentives to support energy efficiency, sustainability, and enhanced learning environments.

District-wide energy improvements were implemented across seven buildings totaling 421,800 ft², including the following key improvements:

  • District-Wide LED Lighting: Outdated fluorescent lighting systems were replaced with energy-efficient LED lighting throughout all buildings, reducing energy consumption and maintenance costs. Over 2,600 interior and exterior lighting fixtures were replaced.
  • Web-Based Building Automation Systems: State-of-the-art, web-based building automation systems were installed in all five elementary schools, enabling precise control of building systems and improved energy management.
  • Building Envelope Enhancements: Four buildings received building envelope improvements, increasing insulation and overall energy efficiency.
  • HVAC Modernization: Four buildings underwent complete HVAC renovations. These upgrades included the installation of high-efficiency water-source heat pump systems and dedicated outdoor air units to enhance indoor air quality and occupant comfort.
  • Geothermal Systems: In two buildings, traditional boiler/tower systems were replaced with environmentally friendly geothermal wellfields, delivering sustainable heating and cooling with reduced carbon emissions.

The $10.8 million initiative is guaranteed to save Hart County Schools $6.7 million over the next 20 years. These savings are due to the 52% reduction in district energy consumption, reducing utility costs for the long-term. By leveraging diverse funding sources, the district was able to implement comprehensive energy-saving measures that not only significantly reduced energy consumption but also created a healthier learning environment for staff and students.
